Mario Giacomelli and Herbert List: Italy
Stephen Daiter Gallery presents the work of two photographers who interpreted Italy in the years following World War II. The exhibition contains both literal and metaphoric images from the classically austere compositions of the Munich-born, multi-lingual international traveler, Herbert List (1903–1975)—to those of the less worldly Mario Giacomelli (1925-2000) whose raw descriptions of his native country sometimes border on 1950s American abstract expressionist painting. Each artist offers his unmistakable visual signature in an array of prints that invite interesting comparisons when viewed together.
Come witness the mastery of Giacomelli's poetic transcription and bold design alonside List's romantic evocation of history infused with a deft touch of the avant-garde.
